ADHD
Neurodiversity is celebrated here. We specialize in the assessment and treatment of ADHD.
Effective treatment for ADHD is multifaceted, often combining medication and behavioral therapy.
- Medication: Stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamines are commonly used to improve focus and reduce impulsivity. Non-stimulant options like atomoxetine are also available.
- Lifestyle changes: Regular exercise, healthy sleep habits, and balanced diet can significantly improve symptom management.
- Behavioral therapy: We work together to create a plan focusing on improving adherence to routines, self-care, organization, time management, and emotional regulation.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders treated include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Our approach to anxiety disorders integrates various strategies for long-term well-being, aiming to address the root causes and manage symptoms effectively. These approaches are often used alongside traditional psychotherapy. Referral for therapy will be provided as appropriate.
- Medication management: SSRI’s, SNRI’s and other medications can regulate brain chemistry to alleviate physical symptoms of distress and “turn down the volume” of negative or worried thoughts.
- Lifestyle support: Regular exercise, healthy sleep habits, and balanced nutrition promote physical and mental well-being, reducing anxiety triggers.
- Mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can activate the relaxation response and promote emotional regulation.
- Complementary therapies: Additional modalities such as acupuncture, massage therapy, and herbal remedies may offer additional support, though scientific evidence varies. We will make recommendations for these as appropriate.
Mood Disorders
Mood Disorders treated: Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Dysthymia, and Seasonal Affective Disorder.
In psychiatry, tackling mood disorders involves a multifaceted approach. These approaches are often used alongside traditional psychotherapy. Referral for therapy will be provided as appropriate.
- Medication: Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics can help regulate brain chemistry and manage symptoms like depression, mania, and anxiety
- Lifestyle support: Regular exercise, healthy sleep habits, and balanced nutrition promote physical and mental well-being.
- Mindfulness and relaxation techniques: Meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can activate the relaxation response and promote emotional regulation.
- TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation): This non-invasive brain stimulation technique utilizes magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions, potentially improving mood and reducing symptoms.
- Psychedelic Assisted Treatment: Ketamine treatment can offer rapid relief for treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder and is generally considered safe.
Although we are not able to offer TMS and Ketamine treatment in our clinic at this time, we will refer you to our community partner for these specific treatments should this be a part of your treatment plan.
Cravings & Impulse Control
We treat those who struggle with cravings for alcohol or other substances at Ruby Mental Wellness, seeking to address the underlying emotional, psychological, or social factors fueling addiction. In addition to treating the co-occurring mental health disorders, we use Naltrexone as part of the treatment plan.
Naltrexone is a medication we use in treatment of cravings, but it’s important to clarify its specific role:
- It’s not a cure: Naltrexone doesn’t directly address the root cause, but it can be a valuable tool in managing cravings and reducing relapse risk.
- It works differently for different substances: While approved for both opioid and alcohol use disorder, naltrexone’s mechanism differs. For opioids, it blocks the pleasurable effects, while for alcohol, it reduces cravings and the urge to drink heavily.
- It’s not addictive: Unlike some other addiction medications, naltrexone doesn’t cause a high or dependence, making it a safer option for long-term use.
- It’s part of a comprehensive approach: Naltrexone is most effective when combined with therapy, support groups, and lifestyle changes for a holistic recovery journey.
Trauma
The treatment for PTSD in psychiatry emphasizes a two-pronged approach: psychotherapy and medication. Referral for therapy will be provided as appropriate.
Medication can help manage symptoms like anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances, potentially improving the effectiveness of psychotherapy. However, it’s crucial to remember that medication alone doesn’t address the core trauma and should be used in conjunction with therapy.
Our holistic approach will also draw from mindfulness practices and lifestyle medications to improve mental and physical wellbeing.
Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders treated at Ruby Mental Wellness include: Binge Eating Disorder and Bulimia Nervosa.
While therapy is often the cornerstone of recovery in Binge Eating Disorder (BED), medication can be a powerful adjunct for some individuals. The FDA-approved option is lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), targeting impulse control. Off-label options like antidepressants may address underlying mood issues that contribute to BED.
Medication also plays a supportive role in bulimia treatment. The only FDA-approved medication for bulimia is fluoxetine (Prozac), but other medications like topiramate (Topamax) may be considered off-label depending on individual needs and response.
We collaborate closely with specialized eating disorder treatment centers in the community, ensuring seamless care and comprehensive support throughout your journey towards healing. Together, we can address both the psychological and biological aspects of eating disorders, empowering you to achieve lasting freedom from this challenging disorder.
